The Quail Motorcycle Gathering 2013
Quail Lodge & Golf Resort, Carmel
The glorious weather sealed it on May 4 for the 5th Annual Quail Motorcycle Gathering in Carmel– another great one!
Guests were happy campers at this casual and captivating event – the perfect blend of supremely professional and organized, with the comfortable, relaxed feeling of being on vacation. There was lots of eye candy (we’re talking bikes) with tons of vintage bikes on the green lawns, and a huge presence of Ducati celebrating 20 Years of the Monster with its Italian designer Miguel Galluzi in attendance. The crowds flocked to an especially eye-catching display of silver from moto-artist Randy Grubb’s collection of bikes and a large aluminum airstream bus with steering up on top, resembling a striking yacht on wheels. Craig Vetter presented him with his second award of the day, for “Innovation.” Randy is from Portland and we hope he returns next year, he’s a friendly new addition!
As always, great food with lots of clean white tables to sit at – bbq chicken, pulled pork, cornbread, corn on the cob, fresh watermelon and a fresh fruit baked dessert, this year strawberry rhubarb with fresh whipped cream. Lots of cold water bottles on hand for the summer heat.
The biggest highlight of the day was seeing 3-time GP world champion Wayne Rainey presented with The Quail Motorcycle Gathering’s first-ever “Legend of the Sport” series award established to commemorate the career of “one seminal motorcycling figure each year.” In honoring Wayne, they of course got best friend and fellow 3-time GP champ Kenny Roberts, who onstage grabbed the magnum of champagne from Wayne, with legendary humor. A third racing star adding to the day’s celebrity mix was flat-tracker Mert Lawwill who often attends to promote his prosthetic hands for injured bikers. It’s rare to be at a show so intimate that you can actually talk with such racing legends.
Wayne was called back onstage with his 1991 Yamaha YZR 500 (#1) for the Best of Show award. This time he was presented with a Tudor watch, one of the event’s official sponsors, while Kenny, back onstage again, lamented, “I never get anything!”
We’ve never done this, but next year it might be fun to register for the 100-mile Quail tour of scenic Monterey Peninsula with parade laps at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, held on the Friday before. The $295 price includes a formal Friday night dinner, seeing and hearing all the other bikes, and show entry for two on Sat. It adds a whole new element to this great Saturday show.
The Quail Motorcycle Gathering is not to be missed if you feel like having a total May vacation day -- the surroundings, the weather, all the friends, tons of bikes to look at, and the food. Its all too great!
